The Queen, 2016 Valley Floor Viognier

1342 Bottles Produced

Fruit sourced from the heart of the Barossa Valley floor. The base of the valley is revered for its omnipotent soils and the grapes the vines produce here.

The 2016 vintage was hand harvested and whole bunch pressed to create an elegantly refined version of viognier.

Picked on flavour and pressed just hard enough to extract some texture. The juice is temperature controlled and ferments over 14 days before being transferred to a new French aqua-flexed barrel and a seasoned French hogs head. The initial ferment ticks out in barrel and the wine then goes through partial secondary ferment all based on flavour, acidity and mouthfeel.

The Queen shows an extraordinary combination of perfume and body. Aromas of apricots and nectarines, citrus and hints of vanilla bean leap from the glass. This bouquet is integral to the fresh fruit forward palate. She offers a poised line of acidity, great length and layers of complex tapestries to tantalize the taste buds.

The King, 2016 Marananga Shiraz

1170 Bottles Produced

Shiraz grapes sourced from highly desired Roennfeldt Rd. vineyards, Marananga, Barossa Valley. Grown by a second-generation vigneron and Mr. Blacks’ major partner in crime. The grapes are hand picked from specially selected rows throughout his two diverse properties.

The majority of this fruit goes through the de-stemmer half filling a small stainless steel vessel. Then an intuitive amount, approximately 10-15% of the total volume, goes in to the belly of the beast as whole bunches. The remaining fruit goes through the de-stemmer and over the top of the whole bunches. Temperature controlled and gently circulated twice daily. Just prior to fermentation finality the skins are pressed into a mixture of one new American and two seasoned French barrels, where any residual sugar from the whole bunches fizzes and ferments until dry. Allowing the wine to have this last hoorah in the barrel encourages a unique harmony and integration between wood and wine. A natural secondary fermentation then occurs in barrel further enhancing this amalgamation. The wine is then racked off its heavy lees and returned to barrel for a minimum of 18 months meditation before bottling.

On pulling the cork the dark rich red clays of the Western Ridge of the Barossa Valley pounce into the nostrils. In a display of evolution and a rage against stagnancy and static the King weaves ever-changing circles of earthy mushrooms, sarsaparilla, black fruits, vanilla, spice and aniseed around his hearth while his faithful gypsies delicately dance to the thrum of generous silky tannins and balanced acidity.

Enjoy now, or cellar and percieve the majestic evolution of this wine.

The Joker, 2016 Kalimna Shiraz

1188 Bottles Produced

Shiraz grapes sourced from a renowned vineyard in Kalimna, Barossa Valley. The property belongs to a notorious second-generation vigneron, long time acquaintance and co- conspirator of The Mysterious Mr. Black.

I have been blessed with the rare opportunity to utilise three rows of this revered fruit to make The Joker Shiraz. Each year the same three rows are hand pruned, canopy managed, nurtured and hand picked to their seasonal potential by yours truly.

This removal of all variables allows the manifestation of a wine that encourages and encapsulates seasonal and regional variation.

De-stemmed and fermented in a small stainless steel vessel. Lightly circulated twice a day and temperature controlled to allow a slow steady fermentation. Just prior to the wine finishing ferment it is pressed off skins into new and seasoned French and American oak barrels. Allowing the wine to have this last fizz-out in the barrel encourages a unique harmony and integration between wood and wine. A natural secondary fermentation then occurs in barrel further enhancing this amalgamation. The wine is then racked off its heavy lees & returned to barrel for a minimum of 18 months contemplation before bottling.

The 2016 Joker displays elegance and poise. A concoction of complex red and black fruits mingled with spice and notes of anise. Soft, earthy tannins and balanced, vibrant acidity flow evenly through the generous length of palate. The balance and structure of this wine whispers of the warm and dry Spring which led to fruit ripening earlier than previous years. A fortuitous dose of rain in late January encouraged the ripening of flavours in the grapes. Picked in late February, The Joker Shiraz was lucky enough to dodge a heavy unseasonal rain in early March.

Shinning brightly now with many years of evolution ahead for the patient palate.

Sa Chair Rose et Noir, 2015 Marananga Shiraz/Cabernet/Pink Fronti - SOLD OUT

364 Bottles Produced

An experiment in fateful farming illuminated by a study of syzygy, sewed together with a procedure of passion.

Sourced from a single row of plantings at our Roennfeldt Rd vineyards, Marananga.

The three varieties of fruit, half de-stemmed, half whole bunches are all co- fermented and hand-plunged in a small picking bin for a total of 40 days. Using wild yeasts indigenous to the vineyard and our winery, the juice and grapes slowly converted their sugars into alc. over twenty days. The young wine then remained on skins for another 20 days covered in a veil of CO2. This extended maceration encouraged maximum extraction of flavour, tannins and color while allowing a softness to develop. The wine was then pressed to a single barrique barrel where natural secondary fermentation occured. Racked of heavy lees and guarded for eight months meditation before bottling.

This wine dances through the ol’factory with aromas of flowers, perfume, blossoms, spice, dill and musk. It’s savory, dry, sweet and sour, complex and simple, an oxymoron in a glass. Delicate tannin and playful acidity, mate in mouth, creating an elegantly supple and intriguing wine.

Baron Von Warblers Pagan Perfume 2014 Rowland Flat Shiraz - SOLD OUT

Fermented in 2 half tonne picking bins and hand plunged twice a day. Pressed to one new American barrel and one French seasoned barrel prior to becoming dry. The ferment finishes in wood amalgamating and integrating the oak and wine. 20 months internalization is spent in the hogs heads before bottling.

Beginning with a veil of earth driven aromas the bouquet awakens to a plethora of black fruits, licorice, spice and sarsaparilla. The depth of flavour, tapestry of tannin and balanced acidity all come together in this black buxom beauty to create a fine representation of vintage and variety.

Boketto, 2017 The Borderlands One Tree Hill Nebbiolo - SOLD OUT

293 Bottles Produced

Boketto - To gaze vacantly into the distance without thinking. Origin: Japanese

"Explicitly Nebbiolo, but without all the challenging parts." - Jesse Lewis @winehound

The Nebbiolo grape that shapeshifted into this wine was picked young on the sugar scale but late in the season. Hand picked bunches were delivered to the winery by 'The Surgeon', grown on his One Tree Hill property.

An intriguing example of Nebbiolo. Nurtured by The Surgeon in The Borderlands, One Tree Hill; an unassuming, relatively unknown grape growing region that lies between the Barossa Ranges and the Adelaide Hills. Only one picking bin of this fruit arrived at the winery creating less than 300 bottles of wine.

Partially de-stemmed, the fruit fermented with the encouragement of indigenous yeasts over 7 days and then remained on skins for a further 10 days before being pressed to one seasoned oak barrique.

Light, friendly and aromatically approachable, the Boketto leads with a bouquet of cherries, red plums and blackcurrant interlaced with a misty musk of pipe tobacco and perfume. Acidity with the vibrancy of youth and the fruit of an old mans toils are balanced harmoniously with soft, passive tannins.

Note: This wine has not been fined or filtered in an effort to encapsulate its youth. Harmless wine diamonds (tartrates) may be discovered by lucky treasure hunters and thrill seekers in the bottom of the bottle.
